My journey

Thelma Rodriguez’s journey began in Chinandega, Nicaragua, where as a young girl she would watch the Miss Universe competition and dream of one day being on that stage herself.

Coming from outside the capital and without an influential family or connections in the pageant world, it wasn’t an obvious path. But when a friend told her about the Miss Universe Nicaragua castings, Thelma decided to take a chance — despite having little experience and not even knowing how to properly walk in high heels.

Making it to the national finals brought new challenges. There were financial pressures, homesickness and moments when she questioned whether she belonged there at all.

At one of her lowest points, Thelma considered giving up. Her father gave her a simple piece of advice that would change the way she approached the competition:

“The only contest you have is yourself.”

The next day, she walked into rehearsals with a completely different mindset. Instead of worrying about the other contestants, she focused on herself — her walk, her confidence and what she could control. People noticed.

That belief helped carry Thelma to winning Miss Universe Nicaragua 2008 and representing her country at Miss Universe in Vietnam.

Before competing internationally, Thelma travelled to Miami to train with leading Venezuelan walk coaches. The experience introduced her to the discipline, technique and preparation behind the famous Latin American pageant walk — lessons that would later become an important part of her own coaching philosophy.

Today, Thelma is based on the Gold Coast, Australia, where she works as an international walk coach and mentor. She has worked with contestants including Moraya Wilson, Maria Thattil and Monique Riley, helping women develop not only their runway technique, but also the confidence and presence needed to command a stage.

But for Thelma, walking has never been only about pageants.

Her coaching now extends to women who simply want to feel more confident in the way they walk, stand and present themselves — whether they are stepping onto a competition stage, entering a fitness contest, walking into an important meeting or simply wanting to carry themselves with greater confidence.

The lesson that began with her father’s words in Nicaragua remains at the heart of what she teaches today:

Your greatest competition is yourself.

Focus on your own journey, believe in what you are capable of, and walk forward with confidence.

What I believe

Confidence is not performative

It is the quiet certainty of knowing who you are and trusting that it is enough

Self-trust is the foundation

Every external achievement begins with the willingness to listen to yourself first

Emotional resilience can be cultivated

It is not a personality trait - it is a practice you return to, again and again

Feminine presence is power

Softness, depth and discernment are not opposites of strength - they are its truest expression

Growth is intentional

Transformation does not happen by accident. It is chosen, daily, in small acts of alignment
