Bullying, Confidence, and Standing Your Ground. (English/Spanish)

Unfortunately, bullying does not end when you leave school. In fact, success can sometimes attract criticism, negativity, and people who want to challenge your achievements. The question is not whether you will face it, but how you choose to respond when it happens.

Winning Miss Universe Nicaragua opened me up to a new level of public scrutiny. As a young woman, I suddenly found myself facing criticism, rumours, and people questioning whether I deserved the title. At one point, another contestant was publicly claiming she should have been the winner. The media quickly picked up the story and began bringing it up during my interviews. Looking back, I believe some people expected me to become upset, defensive, or emotional under the pressure.

During one interview, I was once again asked about the claims. Instead of becoming frustrated, I remained calm. The interviewer asked about the contestant’s comments, and I simply responded by asking a question of my own.

“Who is wearing the sash and crown right now?”

The interviewer replied, “You.”

I then smiled and asked, “And what is my name?”

“Thelma Rodriguez.”

“That’s right,” I said. “Thelma Rodriguez, Miss Universe Nicaragua.”

That was the end of the conversation. The question was never raised again.

The reason I share this story is not because of the controversy itself. It is because it taught me an important lesson about confidence. You do not always need to argue, attack, or lower yourself to someone else’s level. Sometimes the strongest response is to remain calm, stand confidently in your truth, and let your actions speak for themselves.

There will always be people who doubt you, criticise you, or try to diminish your achievements. You can choose to take those comments personally, or you can learn how to manage them and turn them into an opportunity to demonstrate strength and character. Confidence is not about being the loudest person in the room. It is about knowing who you are, believing in yourself, and carrying yourself with grace, even when others are trying to shake your confidence.
